WeConnectU Privacy Policy

WeConnectU is an independent campus networking platform that helps college students connect with classmates, study partners, campus events, and student organizations within their verified university network. WeConnectU is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or officially connected to any university, college, or educational institution.

Information We Collect

When you create an account, we collect your name and university email address, your university affiliation as derived from your email domain, and profile information you choose to provide including major, year, interests, bio, courses, and photos. Photos may include your profile photo as well as academic and social photo galleries you choose to upload.

We also collect connection and messaging activity within the app, events you create, save, or RSVP to, blog posts and study group participation, and club activity including clubs you submit, mark as interested in, or view.

Daily Discovery Activity: When you use the Connect feature to discover other students, we track which profiles were shown to you each day and record your decisions to connect with or pass on each one. If you pass on a profile, we record that decision so the profile is not ordinarily shown to you again in future discovery sessions.

When you sign in with Google or Microsoft, we receive your name and email from those providers. We do not receive your passwords from those services.

For business and organization accounts, we collect business or organization name, business type, contact name, email, phone, website, Instagram handle, address, city, and state, along with event and club information the business chooses to post.

For clubs, we collect the club name, description, category, campus, meeting schedule, location, contact email, social media handle, tags, and a logo photo, along with the identity of the student who submits the club. Club submissions are reviewed by our team before appearing publicly; until approved, a submitted club is visible only to its submitter and to WeConnectU administrators.

Automatically Collected Information. When you use WeConnectU, our systems and service providers may automatically receive limited technical information such as IP address, device or browser type, login timestamps, app interactions, and diagnostic or crash information. We use this information to operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve the service.

How We Verify Student Status

We use eligible university email credentials and supported authentication methods to verify affiliation with a university network at the time you create your account.

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to verify your university affiliation, show your profile to other verified students on your campus, suggest connections based on shared majors, interests, and classes, display relevant campus events and clubs based on your interests and university, deliver messages between connected students, send notifications about connection requests, events, club activity, and other account activity, and provide businesses with aggregated and de-identified analytics about event engagement.

When you mark interest in a club, the club's creator is notified that someone is interested, and other students who are already connected with you may see that you're interested in that club too. Club creators can see the total number of students interested in their club but do not receive individual contact information unless a student chooses to reach out directly.

Third Parties and Service Providers

We do not sell or rent your personal information, and we do not provide identifiable student information to businesses or advertisers. We use trusted service providers to help operate WeConnectU, including cloud hosting, authentication, email or notification delivery, analytics, and security. These providers may process information only as necessary to provide services to WeConnectU and subject to applicable contractual and security requirements.

Businesses on WeConnectU can target events by major, interest, and campus network, but they never receive individual student names, emails, profiles, or contact information. Businesses only see aggregated and de-identified analytics such as total views, RSVPs, general major breakdowns, and interest categories.

What Businesses See

Businesses that post events can see aggregated and de-identified analytics including total views, RSVPs, and general audience breakdowns by major and interest. They cannot see individual student names, profiles, or contact information unless a student chooses to interact with them directly.

Location

We do not collect precise device location. If we introduce location-based functionality in the future, we will request permission and explain how location data is used at that time.

Data Storage and Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information, including encryption in transit and at rest where supported, authentication controls, and database access restrictions limiting users to their own private data such as messages, connection lists, and daily discovery activity. Club submissions pending review are restricted so that only the submitting student and WeConnectU administrators can view them until they are approved.

Your Rights and Account Controls

You can edit your profile at any time, as all fields except email are optional. You can deactivate your account temporarily from within the app, which hides your profile from other students until you log back in. You can permanently delete your account and associated data from within the app, or by contacting us.

When you request account deletion, we delete or de-identify personal data associated with your account within 30 days, except information we are required or permitted to retain for security, fraud prevention, legal compliance, dispute resolution, or other legitimate purposes.

Data Retention

Academic blog posts automatically stop being publicly displayed after 24 hours and become part of your personal post history; they are not deleted from your account. Daily discovery session records are retained as part of your ongoing account activity. If you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your data within 30 days as described above.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as WeConnectU grows. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app or by email.
